Good Reads: 'purdah' culture in India, born good, finding purpose, a Jedi response

This week's good reads includes a young woman's perspective on India's 'purdah' culture, the morality of babies, on whether a life's purpose brings happiness, and an unusual petition to the White House for building a Death Star.

By Ben Arnoldy,?Staff Writer / January 21, 2013

Female staff members of a luxury hotel exhibit their skills after a 10-day self-defense course initiated by the hotel management and Delhi Police women?s wing in New Delhi, India, Jan. 17, 2013. A brutal rape of a 23-year-old student last month has sparked a national debate about the treatment of women and the inability of Indian law enforcement to protect them.

?My first sense as a young girl of sexual menace came from my Indian grandfather. Let me be clear: He never even remotely sexually threatened or molested me. But he made sure I knew that the world in which I, a girl, was growing up was innately perilous to women.?

So starts an illuminating first-person recollection of an American learning the rules of purdah ? or concealment of women from men ? on visits to relatives back in India. Her grandfather upbraided her for uppity talk and anything but simple dress, to teach her that the more invisible she was, the more safe she would be.

Mira Kamdar, writing on the Asia Society website, connects these lessons to the recent gang rape of a young woman on a bus in Delhi: ?It is clear ... that a purdah mentality still dogs Indian society. A woman who can be seen is seen as a woman available for violation.? But, at the same time, ?[r]apid modernization and urbanization in India have made women, especially young women, visible as never before.?

Babies born good

Parents, it turns out that your bundles of joy could also be described as budding altruists. Writing for the Smithsonian magazine, Abigail Tucker writes on a heartwarming new area of research that?s finding babies showing preferences for ?good guys? over ?bad guys? and a proclivity to help and care for others.

?These findings may seem counterintuitive to anyone who has seen toddlers pull hair in a playground tunnel or pistol-whip one another with a plastic triceratops,? notes Ms. Tucker.

But a series of cleverly designed experiments at Yale and Harvard universities are seeing an orientation toward the good long before parents would seem to have had much chance to shape behavior.

The eureka moment for one researcher came while passing a ball back and forth with a toddler. The ball got away from the scientist, and rather than get it, he faked an inability to reach it. Seeing his struggle, the toddler got up to retrieve it for him. Other experiments involved puppet shows in which one color puppet is shown helping or hindering another. Eye-tracking tests found infants as young as 3 months old preferring the helper.?

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of meaning

Whether we are born with it, or taught it, altruism looks to be key to our well-being as adults.

Emily Esfahani Smith, writing for The Atlantic, highlights a new psychological study that suggests ?a meaningful life and happy life overlap in certain ways, but are ultimately very different.? Researchers interviewing 400 Americans found meaning in life to be tied up with being a ?giver,? while happiness was more linked with being a ?taker.? Meaning is also found in contemplating the future and the past, while happiness is fixated on the present ? and is consequently more fleeting.

From the nation?s foundational documents to the self-help aisles of bookstores, Americans are famously in pursuit of happiness. But that?s something of a mug?s game: ?Research has shown that having purpose and meaning in life increases overall well-being and life satisfaction, improves mental and physical health, enhances resiliency, enhances self-esteem, and decreases the chances of depression. On top of that, the single-minded pursuit of happiness is ironically leaving people less happy, according to recent research,? Ms. Smith writes.

The magazine goes on to cite data that roughly 40 percent of Americans have not found a ?satisfying life purpose.?

There will be no Death Star

A group of Internet pranksters raised the 25,000-plus signatures needed to get a response from the White House on their petition to have the US build a Death Star. The White House, to no one?s surprise, replied that the country would not be building the moon-shaped space station from the ?Star Wars? films that could blast planets into space dust. But the wording of the response, glorious it was.

?Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars? ? $850,000,000,000,000,000, according to one study ? ?on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?? wrote Paul Shawcross, chief of the Science and Space Budget at the White House Office of Management and Budget, and arguably the best communicator to emerge from the intersection of space science, accounting, and the federal government.

This smooth-talking Jedi then went on to highlight the gee-whiz stuff the government and the private sector are doing in space.
?[W]e?ve got two spacecraft leaving the Solar System and we?re building a probe that will fly to the exterior layers of the Sun. We are discovering hundreds of new planets in other star systems and building a much more powerful successor to the Hubble Space Telescope that will see back to the early days of the universe.?

In other news, the White House has just upped the signature threshold for a response to 100,000.

Long-Term Partner Search

It's come to the point that I need to fill that role player sized hole in my life...well I do have one current partner but I feel I really need two to keep me sharp (i.e. feed my addiction).

I didn't suggest a particular type of rp in my title because I am open to so much. The only topics that I am really not interested in are: high school realistic..I don't even understand why that is a genre..different strokes for different folks, I guess. The other is fan fiction. I'm not opposed to using the setting or concept of say Dragon Age but we would be telling our own story with our own characters. My hope is that really we will get to explore multiple rps or one super epic. I can play male as well as female and multiples at once.

About me as a role player

I'm not a creativity nazi, but I expect at least a real effort of creativity and sentence structure to be put forth. I'm largely laid-back but, seriously? Try and give me some substance to work off of. But on that note, I make occasional typos. I roleplay to relax not to write a doctorate.

I would prefer anyone I play with to be over 18. Now that I've reached 24, I start to worry about corrupting the youth and I don't want to hold back on the violence or suggestive language or any other PG13ness.

I'm a friggin' roleplaying addict, but I am also a college student with a husband and a daughter. Sometimes I don't have time to post but keep me interested and I'll be foaming at the mouth to get at my computer again. Try and guilt me for being busy that evening and I'll be increasingly less interested. Guilt trips do work on me but they also really start to piss me off.

I can't think of any real limits I have because I don't like limiting people but if you have them just be sure I know so I don't overstep :)

I like romance. I'm used to playing one-on-one rp style with men and that's the natural avenue. But don't mistake me for a fluffy romance girl. Having something your character loves just gives you another option for messing with them. I also get bored of perfect romances. While they do have their uses and are perfect for some of my mild mannered, sweet tempered characters--they don't always fit and often conflict leads to more story. But it can't always be conflict either, good times gives your character motivation through the bad times.

So if you are interested just let me know! Also I'm most practiced doing ims so we will have to play through PM unless you want to hold my hand learning these style ;)

Do common painkillers cause kidney failure in children?

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen, are commonly used to treat pain and reduce fever in children. However, the use of NSAIDs has been shown to cause acute kidney injury (AKI) in some children. A new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics reports the findings on the number of children diagnosed with AKI caused by NSAIDs in one hospital over an 11 ? year span.

Dr. Jason Misurac and colleagues from the Indiana University School of Medicine and Butler University retrospectively screened all patients hospitalized at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health who were identified with AKI. Out of 1015 patients with AKI, 27 were identified to have NSAID-associated AKI. Seventy-eight percent of the 27 patients had been using NSAIDs for less than 7 days, and 75% took the medication at the correct dosage. In 67% of the cases, the family reported that the child had signs of dehydration. Most of the patients were teens; however, patients who were less than 5 years old were more seriously affected and more likely to need dialysis. Although the reasons for younger children having a more severe disease course are unknown, the authors speculate that it could be due to an increased susceptibility to the toxic effects of NSAIDs. None of the patients died or developed permanent kidney failure, but 30% of the children had evidence of mild chronic kidney damage persisting after recovery from the episode of AKI.

The costs of caring for children with NSAID-associated AKI are significant, especially considering that this is an avoidable condition. Adding to this cost burden is the long-term care needed, because studies show that these patients have an increased risk of progressive chronic kidney disease. In some cases, acetaminophen might be a more appropriate choice for treatment. "This study underscores the importance of understanding the natural history of NSAID-associated AKI, including the potential for development of chronic kidney disease," notes Dr. Misurac. "Providers should continue to provide careful NSAID education to parents and children."

Avoiding The Alternative Minimum Tax | The White Coat Investor ...

Tom Martin

[Editor's Note: This is a guest post from Tom Martin, CFP?, CPWA?, AIF? and Eric Meyer.?? Tom is one of the authors of Doctors Eyes Only and an executive with Larson Financial Group LLC.? He has guest posted here before.? Eric is an accountant and the executive director of MedTax, which partners with Larson.? I wrote recently about the AMT, but it is such an increasingly important topic for docs, it never hurts to hit it again from a different perspective.? I have no financial relationship with either author.? Like every other post on this blog, this one is for educational purposes and does not constitute tax, legal, or accounting advice.? Eric is an accountant, but he isn't YOUR accountant.? Tom is a financial planner, but he's not YOUR financial planner.]

Eric Meyer

Each year, more and more physicians find themselves subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT).? When asked, many don?t know how they got there or what, if anything, they can do about it.

The first year I owed AMT caught me by surprise.? I?d run through tax projections with my accountant at quarterly intervals throughout the year.? Why were our projections off by more than $10,000?? Why are many physicians paying between $5,000 and $15,000 per year in taxes that they do not owe under our normal tax system?? Enter the AMT.

This brief post will educate you on the AMT, some common triggering pitfalls for physicians, and finally, what might be done to minimize its impact on your taxes.

What is the AMT?

The alternative minimum tax was instituted back in 1969 when 155 American families earning more than $1 million owed $0 in federal income tax.? This was due to the way deductions were established at the time.? Congress didn?t think these families were paying their fair share.? Instead of changing the tax code for everyone, they decided to institute an entirely new tax structure to bring these families back into the tax-paying fold.

In its most basic form, the AMT is a totally separate way of calculating how much you owe in taxes.? By examining line 45 of your personal tax return (2011 Form 1040), you?ll quickly see if you have been historically falling under this other tax structure.? To simplify, think of AMT as a flat tax rate of approximately 28%.? This is different than the effective and marginal tax rates you?ve already learned about on this blog.? Under AMT, there are only two marginal brackets?a 26% bracket and a 28% bracket.? The 28% bracket kicks in after $175,000 of income.

What causes you to be subject to AMT??

You?re subject to the AMT because you are eligible for deductions under our normal tax system that Congress has deemed inappropriate for the AMT system.? Some deductions are safe under AMT, and don?t hurt you, while other deductions are not and can.? Because of this, it?s not easy to look at someone?s income and know in advance if they will or will not be subject to AMT.? A general rule of thumb is that you are more likely to be subject to AMT if your income is between $250,000 and $500,000 per year, but several families with incomes in excess of $1 million per year still owe AMT.

What deductions are typically safe under the AMT??

  • Charitable contributions
  • Mortgage interest for your personal residence (note the home equity loan exception below)
  • Deductions for your business taken on Schedule C or through your LLC or S-Corp
  • Retirement plan contributions

What deductions or tax-advantaged issues can commonly cause a physician to be subject to the AMT????

  • Property taxes
  • State and local taxes
  • Mortgage interest for certain home equity loans
  • Unreimbursed business expenses deducted on Schedule A
  • Professional fees deducted on Schedule A (including legal and investment advisory fees)
  • Realization of long-term capital gains
  • Interest from certain municipal bonds deemed ?private activity bonds?
  • The exercise of incentive stock options (provided by an employer)
  • Use of the standard deduction

What are some ways to potentially reduce exposure to the AMT?

  1. Claim itemized deductions even if smaller than the standard deduction.
  2. Ask for a larger expense reimbursement account from your employer in exchange for a smaller salary.
  3. Increase contributions to retirement plans offered by your employer.
  4. Use a dependent care reimbursement arrangement through your employer to deduct your childcare expenses rather than claiming these deductions on your tax return.
  5. Consider timing state, local, and property tax payments to bundle them into an every-other-year payment structure.
  6. Reduce exposure to private activity municipal bonds.
  7. Have your investment advisor bill fees to your IRAs or 401(k) rather than your taxable (non-qualified) account. (if you fall under AMT, then you are not able to deduct investment advisory or other professional fees even if they exceed the 2% threshold)
  8. Consider converting traditional IRA funds to Roth IRA funds if you are comfortable with a 28% tax rate.

Each situation is unique.? Even if you find you owe AMT, there may be ways to reduce or eliminate it.? We advocate that physicians should have their accountant run a year-end tax projection each November.? This way they can see if AMT is an issue and seek to reduce exposure if possible.

Patience may be required in Jamie Benn negotiations, because both ...

ROMULUS, Michigan _ As the Stars ponder the meaning of the universe at the Marriott Courtyard not far from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, my thoughts drifted to the Jamie Benn contract negotiation.

And this is what I came up with: ?Don?t panic, it will all work out.??

You?re probably replying in your head with ?Genius work, Sherlock, that take you all day???

And I will say, it probably took me six months?even the last decade or so. After suffering through two lockouts and watching the venom and panic exuded on all sides, the lasting impression to me is: ?Don?t panic, it will all work out.?? Because, today, even as the Stars? plane is being fixed and the?players are forced to pair up in rooms and shuffle across the parking lot to get lunch, they?re just fine. It?s not that bad, actually kind of fun at times.

One guy called it ?urban camping,?? and it has that feel.

The business of sports is still a business at its heart, and business deals have to be made. That?s what I learned in the past two lockouts, and that?s what I?m learning during the Jamie Benn negotiations.

The Stars aren?t idiots for not giving into Jamie Benn?s demands. Jamie Benn isn?t a selfish player who is ?putting a few bucks ahead of his team?s current wins and losses,?? as some would have you believe on Twitter. It?s just a negotiation, and both sides disagree.

Why? Well, there?s lots of reasons. Benn has played for three seasons on an entry level contract that paid him at a fairly low level _ an average of $821,667. That level was set by his draft placement, and his draft placement was in the fifth round (129th overall). If you were to redo the 2007 entry draft, he might be taken in the top five, so it would be easy for Benn and his agent Rich Evans to imagine that the Stars have received a very nice bargain over the past three seasons.

What?s more, Benn and Evans are coming up with a strategy to maximize his pay in a changing marketplace. Had Benn signed this deal four years ago, he might get $3 million a season on a three-year contract. Now, he might get $5 million. In the future, it might be $6 or $7 million. That?s one of the reasons the Benn camp is probably trending toward a shorter deal.

The Stars would probably like a longer deal to get Benn tied up for a while. They understand that could cost more, so the going rate will probably be close to $6 million. But they still maintain that the RFA years in the deal should be considerably cheaper, closer to a $4.5 million average.

So then while they ponder term, the price point is going to be different on each package. You want three years, you get lower price. You want higher price, you have to go five or six years.

And the Benn camp understands that strategy. It just thinks the price point should be higher.

And that?s business.

You really can?t blame either side in this. Evans wants to get the most money for his client and still maintain the ability for a higher salary if Benn becomes one of the best players in the league. That?s smart.

The Stars want to get Benn in as low as possible, and also want to make sure the bar is set in the proper place for the rest of the contracts that will follow him. There are a bunch of kids who will be going through this same process in the coming years, and the Stars need to establish a Dallas market price. That?s smart.

So each side is simply doing its job.

I?ve heard people say that Benn is being led in the wrong direction by Evans. I disagree. He?s a 23-year-old man who has selected his agent and is informed by his agent. Evans works for Benn, not the other way around. Maybe Benn simply feels he?s worth more.

As for strategy, it seems smart for the player and agent to use the leverage of games being played. Benn isn?t a holdout, he simply doesn?t have a contract. He?s not doing anything wrong. In fact, he?s probably doing just what you would do if you had the same situation presented. Think about it: Are you willing to risk a few weeks of hockey pay to get the long-term deal at a price you feel you deserve?

I?ve heard the Stars are being silly for not just tossing Benn whatever extra money is needed. I disagree.?Being are concerned with their salary structure for the future seems like a good plan. There are needs for this team in the future, and all of those needs have to be considered _ not just getting one guy signed so he doesn?t miss five or six games. Think about it: Are you willing to trust your team for a couple of weeks if it means you get the team salary structure you feel is important for the long-term?

So you can see both sides of this.

There has been a moving target on term in the negotiations, as the two sides have looked at five years recently, but I still have the feeling they will settle on three years at some point. That?s just a guess, but it makes sense to me.

And when they settle, everyone will hug and say how much they love each other, and move forward like this never happened.

Because on a chilly Wednesday in Romulus, Michigan, the Stars and their players aren?t worried about the CBA anymore. They are thankful for their jobs, and they?re gaining perspective on life and how to handle adversity like travel issues.

?Don?t panic, it will all work out.?? That seems like a good philosophy on this day.

?

Ultra-small devices for energy-efficient electronics

Jan. 21, 2013 ? A team of scientists from Tyndall National Institute?at University College Cork and the National University of Singapore have designed and fabricated ultra-small devices for energy-efficient electronics. By finding out how molecules behave in these devices, a ten-fold increase in switching efficiency was obtained by changing just one carbon atom. These devices could provide new ways to combat overheating in mobile phones and laptops, and could also aid in electrical stimulation of tissue repair for wound healing.

The breakthrough creation of molecular devices with highly controllable electrical properties will appear in the February issue of Nature Nanotechnology. Dr. Damien Thompson at the Tyndall National Institute, UCC and a team of researchers at the National University of Singapore led by Prof. Chris Nijhuis designed and created the devices, which are based on molecules acting as electrical valves, or diode rectifiers.

Dr. Thompson explains, "These molecules are very useful because they allow current to flow through them when switched ON and block current flow when switched OFF. The results of the study show that simply adding one extra carbon is sufficient to improve the device performance by more than a factor of ten. We are following up lots of new ideas based on these results, and we hope ultimately to create a range of new components for electronic devices." Dr. Thompson's atom-level computer simulations showed how molecules with an odd number of carbon atoms stand straighter than molecules with an even number of carbon atoms. This allows them to pack together more closely. Tightly-packed assemblies of these molecules were formed on metal electrode surfaces by the Nijhuis group in Singapore and were found to be remarkably free of defects. These high quality devices can suppress leakage currents and so operate efficiently and reliably. The device can be cleanly switched on and off purely on the basis of the charge and shape of the molecules, just like in the biological nanomachines that regulate photosynthesis, cell division and tissue growth.

Tyndall Electronic Theory Group leader Prof. Jim Greer explains: "Modern electronic devices such as telephones and tablets in manufacture today rely on tiny switches approaching molecular sizes. This provides new challenges for electronics but opens up exciting opportunities for blending molecular properties to be used to advantage. Dr. Thompson?s work is an exciting new avenue to exploit molecular design to achieve new ways to perform information processing." A key enabling feature for nanoscale electronics will be the ability to use molecules as rectifiers and switches. By demonstrating the rational design of molecules that rectify current with a large and highly-reproducible ON/OFF ratio, the study provides a key advance towards the creation of technologically viable ultra-small device components. Fifty thousand of the rectifier molecules strung end to end would fit across the diameter of a human hair. Advances in computing, synthesis and characterisation means scientists can now understand and control material at the scale of atoms and molecules.

The study was funded on the Irish side by a Science Foundation Ireland Starting Investigator award to Dr. Thompson. The computer simulations were performed on Science Foundation Ireland-supported computing clusters at Tyndall and at the Irish Centre for High End Computing. The combined experiments and simulations show for the first time that minute improvements in molecule orientation and packing trigger changes in van der Waals forces that are sufficiently large to dramatically improve the performance of electronic devices. Dr. Thompson explains: "These van der Waals forces are the weakest of all intermolecular forces and only become significant when summed over large areas. Hence, up until now, the majority of research into ultra-small devices has used stronger "pi-pi" interactions to stick molecules together, and has ignored the much weaker, but ubiquitous, van der Waals interactions. The present study shows how van der Waals effects, which are present in every conceivable molecular scale device, can be tuned to optimise the performance of the device."

The devices are based on molecules that act as diodes by allowing current to pass through them when operated at forward bias and blocking current when the bias is reversed. Molecular rectifiers were first proposed back in 1974, and advances in scientific computing have allowed molecular?level design to be used over the past decade to develop new organic materials that provide better electrical responses. However, the relative importance of the interactions between the molecules, the nature of the molecule-metal contact and the influence of environmental effects have been questioned. This new research demonstrates that dramatic improvements in device performance may be achieved by controlling the van der Waals forces that pack the molecules together. Simply changing the number of carbon atoms by one provides significantly more stable and more reproducible devices that exhibit an order of magnitude improvement in ON/OFF ratio. The research findings demonstrate the feasibility of boosting device performances by creating tighter seals between molecules.

"The development of molecular scale electronics is heavily reliant on simulation and high performance computing", commented Prof. Greer. "The continued support for research infrastructure in Ireland allows for the scientific advances that lead to enhanced interaction with global industry leaders, and positions Ireland to be a key provider of research with impact."

Cubs planning $300 million Wrigley renovation

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:27 p.m. ET Jan. 19, 2013

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Cubs plan on restoring Wrigley Field, with or without the city's help.

The team announced a five-year, $300 million plan to rebuild the Friendly Confines at the annual Cubs Convention on Saturday, and owner Tom Ricketts said his family is willing to foot the entire bill - but only if some long-standing restrictions are lifted.

"(We would) like to be treated like the other 29 clubs," Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney said. "If (the Ricketts) are going to be able to build their business, put signs where they need them, hold games when they need them, they're prepared to write the entire check themselves."

That doesn't mean the Cubs wouldn't accept some help from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

"If we're a public enterprise that's going to be restricted like a public asset, and it comes time for renovation, we'd like to be supported," Kenney said, adding that the mayor has been "terrific" throughout their conversations.

A call to the Mayor's office for comment was not immediately returned.

Due to its location in the middle of a residential neighborhood, the Cubs are limited to a maximum of 30 home night games per season and can't play night games on Friday or Saturday.

They're also the only major league team that faces advertising limitations.

"We'd just like a little more flexibility to have that stuff," Ricketts said. "We have an opportunity that is tremendous. Just give us some relief on some of these restrictions and then we'll take care of Wrigley Field."

Taxpayer burden and job creation are two other points of contention when it comes to the project. Ricketts tried to put them both to bed on Saturday. The remodeling, which the team hopes will start at the end of the 2013 season, would create about 2,100 jobs over five years, according to team projections.

Ricketts, who bought the team in 2009, said the team has been looking beyond the taxpayers for help.

"We're not looking at amusement taxes," he said. "We're trying to think of other things that might help us finance the renovations and move forward."

The stadium overhaul includes a large increase in restrooms and an expanded concourse. More than 50 million pounds of concrete and steel will be removed.

All of the historical aspects of the field will be retained, including the ivy, center field scoreboard and the iconic Chicago Cubs marquee.

"The elements that really define Wrigley Field, we would be the last ones who would want to touch those," Kenney said.

Kenney also called the Cubs facilities "the worst in Major League Baseball."

General manager Jed Hoyer said the home clubhouse would top the priority list, comparing Wrigley's facilities to Fenway Park's when he and Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein were in Boston.

"Theo and I both saw how (the renovations) changed the organization, going from an iconic ballpark in a beautiful city, but also in adding first-class facilities," Hoyer said.

Ricketts make it no secret that they have a similar path in mind.

"We certainly watched what the Red Sox did and there are a lot of lessons we can use," he said. "We've hired a lot of the people they used on their park to do our park."

The Cubs also hope to match Boston's success on the field under Epstein and Hoyer. The duo is in its second year of a rebuilding project much larger than just a stadium. The Cubs lost 101 games last season, haven't been to the playoffs since 2008 and haven't won a World Series since 1908.

While the Cubs have a five-year plan for the stadium restoration, their on-field rebuilding is much murkier.

"We're trying to get this organization healthy," manager Dale Sveum said. "Within a year, believe me, this thing has come a long, long way.

Still, Ricketts, Hoyer and Epstein repeatedly dodged fan questions about specific timelines for success.

"It doesn't happen overnight," Ricketts said. "You just have to think long-term. We think we have the right time horizon to do it the right way.

"I really do believe we have the smartest guys in baseball building us a championship team. It just takes time."

Catdance elevates the cat video to Sundance level

(AP) ? Everyone's favorite Internet meme ? the cat video ? has hit the big time.

Behold the Catdance Film Festival, a one-night celebration of camera-worthy cats that was held Saturday at the Sundance Film Festival.

The five short films that were featured went beyond the typical surprised-kitty or cat-threatens-dog fare popular on YouTube. The Catdance films, culled from submissions by cat lovers across the country, told creative, feline-focused tales. There was the story of an aging Internet cat who can't cope with the loss of fame and "A Cat's Guide to Caring for a Human."

"Humans are inherently lazy," reported the latter film in a '50s-inspired instructional style. "Left to their own devices, they will sleep well past the break of dawn."

Other films included "Catalogue," where a couple orders a bedspread from a catalog and is surprised to see that the cat shown in the photo was shipped with the comforter. "Rocky" tells a heartfelt story of a man's 17-year relationship with his cat. In "A Change of Heart," a photo of a cat on a cellphone saves a failing relationship.

Each of the five finalists was awarded a golden cat-litter scoop.

Actress AnnaLynne McCord hosted the event, which was sponsored by the Fresh Step litter brand. The 25-year-old "90210" star is a lifelong cat lover who proudly displayed photos and videos of her cat, Christopher Buni, on her own cell Saturday.

"What's not to love about a cat?" she asked. "Cats have so much personality. They're very highly intelligent creatures, and if you're a highly intelligent creature, you respond to that."

McCord is known for taking her cat to work on set, and once dashed out of her house naked to chase away a coyote who was threatening her kitty companion.

The Catdance Film Festival was accompanied by a festive, feline-themed party on Park City's Main Street. Spoofs of famous movie posters dotted the walls, with cats replacing the stars of films such as "Top Gun," ''Pulp Fiction," ''The Big Lebowski" and "Clueless." Drinks such as the Feline Fresh and Kitten Kaboodle were served, along with tuna appetizers.

Catdance continues online: Fans can watch the feline films beginning Sunday and vote for their favorite until Feb. 28. The winning filmmaker will collect $10,000. Also available are limited-edition knit hats with cat ears, with all proceeds benefiting the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Cats have even clawed their way into the actual Sundance festival. They had their own official entry with the short film "Catnip: Egress to Oblivion?", director Jason Willis' spoof of educational movies exploring social ills. The seven-minute film, which ran in Sundance's midnight-movie program, has commentary from the "Catnip Crisis Center" and other supposed scientific groups about the effects and hazards felines face when partaking of catnip.

Willis called it "mostly a home movie about my cats" and said the film's entire budget came to $25 ? to buy catnip.

SMP at Home: Family Photoshoot from White Loft Studio + Seasonal ...

This particular photoshoot?embodies a number of things we adore here at SMP at Home: a big cozy bed, a loving family, and brand new teeny tiny babies. As the author of New England Markets, Christine has become a bit of a go-to for us in terms of learning about local, delicious produce and all-things-farmers markets. Basically: she has the most darling family and she?s a food-lovers dream; for that we?re thrilled to have her here today. Not only is she sharing a beautifully intimate moment captured by White Loft Studio, she?s also divulging a simple recipe + a printable illustrated seasonal produce guide that we can?t wait to test out ourselves. ?PS ? the rest of the gallery is filled with way more baby goodness!

Photography: White Loft Studio

From Christine? In our family, we place great importance on eating locally. This becomes a bit tricky in the winter months, when fresh produce options are rather slim here in New England. Thankfully, we have a wonderful wintertime farmers market in our town, and thanks to the ingenuity of New England farmers, there are just enough offerings to keep us well fed. Root vegetables are a staple of locally-focused winter diets, and lucky for us, sweet potatoes are an ideal first food for infants. These nutritional superstars, chock full of fiber, potassium, beta-carotene and vitamin C, are creamy, flavorful and easy-to-digest. With a bit of creativity, this multitasking veggie can feed the whole family! I am so busy juggling the needs of a baby and toddler, that I really appreciate healthy meals that can be adapted to feed every member of our family.

Eating with the seasons has a myriad of both health and environmental benefits. But the most compelling reason to adhere to nature?s calendar is that produce simply tastes better when it?s enjoyed at the height of its growing season. We have become so accustomed to seeing every type of produce available year-round at the grocery store, that it can be hard to keep track of what really is in-season. Let this simple, beautifully illustrated guide remind you of the natural seasons for most fruits and vegetables (keep in mind there will be slight variations from region to region, depending on the climate).?Click here to download the guide for yourself. Print it out on full-sized letter paper and keep it on your fridge as a constant reminder!

?

And in case you?re wondering what to feed your family during the cold winter months, Christine has lovingly prepared a quick and easy recipe that will be sure to satisfy each member in your household!

?Sweet Potatoes, Three Ways

Ingredients-Art

4 whole sweet potatoes
Liquid for pureeing (breast milk, water, or broth)
Variety of condiments such as black beans, salsa, shredded cheese, hummus, avocado, chickpeas

Instructions-Art-2

For Baby:
1. Preheat oven to 400F.

2. Wash each sweet potato and, using a fork, poke several holes in the skin.

3. Place the potato directlyon the oven rack, and bake for 30-60 minutes, until soft.

4. Once the potato is cooked, slice it end to end, and scoop out the insides.

5. Using a blender, and liquid of your choice (breast milk, water, or broth), puree until it reaches the consistency that your baby prefers.

For Toddler:
1. Bake sweet potato same as above, and when cooked, cut it into bit sized cubes (don?t overcook, you want a bit of firmness so cubes hold their shape).

2. Serve with a multitude of dipping sauces (hummus, salsa, mashed avocado) for a fun, healthy, interactive lunch or dinner!

For Mom & Dad:
1. Bake sweet potato same as above, and when cooked, slice from end to end.

2. Serve with a host of different toppings, for a make-your-own stuffed potato bar. I like mine with diced avocado, salsa, black beans, and shredded cheese for a Southwest-style treat. I also like crispy shallots, garlicky-sauteed kale and chickpeas for a healthy option. You can also choose to try sweet toppings as opposed to savory- a bit of butter, cinnamon, brown sugar and toasted pecans is divine!

Facebook Wanted Google to Power Graph Search, but Chose Bing for "Privacy"

Facebook's new Graph Search is a big deal, but Google-killer it is not, even if it works exactly as Facebook promised, of which there's no guarantee. Facebook's not positioning it as such in any case, in fact, it says it wanted to work with Google but they couldn't reach an agreement.

Facebook Graph Search works with Facebook data, and it's designed to help you find stuff that's relevant to you and your friends. But when it can't do that, it offloads your query to Bing which does a regular web search. Microsoft invested in Facebook several years back and the two have been pretty close up till now, though Microsoft's been giving more than it's taking.

Bing already powers web search on Facebook, continuing to do so isn't much of a surprise. But Zuckerberg, at the event showcasing the new search engine, actually addressed whether Facebook would work with Google.

"I think that the main thing is that when people share something on Facebook we want to give them the ability to broadcast something out and then take it down or set privacy settings," TechCrunch paraphrased Zucker's answer to a question about partnering up with Google.

"That requires quick updating, removing photos. We also need that content to be gone if something changes their privacy settings," he added.

"You need infrastructure that can support that. Microsoft was more willing to do things that fit with Facebook. People want flexibility, and that was the stumbling block with Google in our last round of talks. I?m not sure if that was detail in the negotiation or rift between Facebook?s and Google?s strategies," he said.

While it's nice that he answered, he doesn't really say much. He tries to not come out as the bad guy, he tries to drum up Bing and put down Google, all without being too obvious.

The thing to take away though is that it does look like there have been , at least, some talks between Google and Facebook. That alone doesn't mean much though, either could have come with unreasonable demands so the talks wouldn't go anywhere.

Given Facebook's past record, it wasn't willing to give Google much data in return for the service, meaning Facebook search would be better but Google would not get anything out of it, except more searches and maybe a cut of the potential revenue from Graph Search.

This is what Facebook means by privacy here, it wanted to provide Google with a query and no user data at all.

Forex Tips and Tricks | Liberty

On a daily basis, thousands and thousands of trades are created in a very currency exchange market place identified as Forex trading. The phrase ?Forex? instantly stems fx rogue review from the start of two phrases ? ?foreign? and ?exchange?. As opposed to other buying and selling techniques including the stock marketplace, Fx doesn?t include the investing of any items, bodily or representative. In its place, Forex trading operates by means of purchasing, advertising, and buying and selling involving the currencies of varied economies from all over the world. For the reason that Currency trading industry is really a international investing process, trades are created twenty-four hours a day, 5 times weekly. Furthermore, Currency trading isn?t bound by any 1 regulate company, which suggests that Fx would be the only real no cost industry financial investing method out there currently. By leaving the exchange costs from any 1 group?s fingers, it?s significantly a lot more tough to even try and manipulate or corner the currency market place. With all the pros linked together with the Forex trading technique, and also the world-wide variety of participation, the Fx marketplace would be the major industry while in the total planet.

Everywhere concerning one trillion and one.five trillion equivalent U . s . bucks are traded about the Fx market place every single and each day.

So fairly than information you by way of a structured internet site with much more particulars by a variety of sections; they frequently make use of this pitch webpage and so they commonly pack it with facts as well as a ton of tricky providing. It has tested for being the craze and it is really gotten more challenging and more challenging for many EAs to current market their software program with out these kind of pitch pages. It is actually normally the situation with electronic goods and or/stuff you could get on the net. In terms of these make-money-online and Currency trading web sites they generally use a large amount of flash to them and clearly lots of important things to draw clients in. Actually it truly is not a lot distinctive from every other sort of marketing, most absolutely not the likes of other financial systems, and so forth. They ought to have some kind of attractiveness and be aggressive. My summary is usually that regardless if it appears like it may be a fraud, do your research anyhow and it could not be. It just is dependent. Some points are symptoms, but in my view net design and style and really hard advertising are certainly not immediate symptoms of the fraud.

Nevertheless while in the Currency trading Marketplace a thing to hope for will be charts and evidence.

Most fx alternatives buying and selling is carried out by way of phone as you?ll find only a handful of currency trading brokers delivering on the net foreign exchange selection buying and selling platforms.

Fx Possibility Defined ? A fx alternative is really a economic currency agreement supplying the currency trading possibility customer the ideal, although not the obligation, to buy or market a particular foreign exchange spot agreement (the fundamental) in a unique price tag (the strike selling price) on or in advance of a particular date (the expiration date). The total the forex trading possibility customer pays into the forex trading solution seller for that currency trading alternative agreement legal rights is referred to as the forex trading choice ?premium.?

The Forex trading Solution Purchaser ? The purchaser, or holder, of the foreign currency selection has the alternative to both promote the foreign currency selection agreement ahead of expiration, or she or he can opt to maintain the foreign currency choices agreement right until expiration and workout her or his correct to get a placement within the fundamental spot foreign currency. The act of working out the foreign currency solution and using the subsequent fundamental situation from the foreign currency spot market place is called ?assignment? or staying ?assigned? a spot situation.

As I stated over, the foreign exchange buying and selling is regarded as on the list of most lucrative and appealing options for expense as any individual can very easily do at your house or place of work and from any a part of the globe.

For succeeding the Fx trading, someone is just not needed to carry out any on line advertising, marketing and advertising and many others. The one need while in the Fx trading is definitely the account that anyone is needed to open up with trustworthy and registered brokers, a pc process and speedy online link.

Now, you have got to become very careful when opening a Currency trading account with any broker due to the fact some can be Fraud. The Commodity Futures Investing Commission (CFTC) in US has jurisdiction above all Futures and Currency trading exercise. When investing while in the foreign exchange markets, consumers must only trade which has a CFTC registered entity that is certainly also a member from the Country wide Futures Association (NFA) and is particularly controlled because of the CFTC. For non-US broker/ lender entities, make certain the broker or lender is registered with that country?s correct regulatory bodies.

The solitary most evident response is naturally ? online! On the net fx trading presents you immediate accessibility towards the forex trading market place and there is plenty and a great deal of corporations available that happen to be in enterprise only to offer with you on the net. Be vigilant, do shell out some time to acquire some superior currency trading training, yet again this may be presented on the web and setup your dummy account to trade previously you try and go reside. Should you acquire treatment and acquire your time, there is no rationale why you should not become successful in foreign currency trading so, have persistence and adhere at it!

CHICAGO -- Chicago rapper Chief Keef has been taken into custody after a juvenile court judge decided a video of him firing a semiautomatic rifle at a New York gun range was a violation of probation.

The artist, real name Keith Cozart, was sentenced last year to 18 months' probation after his conviction on aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charges for pointing a gun at police officers.

Defense attorney Dennis Berkson told Walker his client never took the gun outside of the range and the target practice was supervised.

Chief Keef's first album, "Finally Rich," was released last year to mixed reviews.

Pill-sized device provides rapid, detailed imaging of esophageal lining

Monday, January 14, 2013

Physicians may soon have a new way to screen patients for Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous condition usually caused by chronic exposure to stomach acid. Researchers at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have developed an imaging system enclosed in a capsule about the size of a multivitamin pill that creates detailed, microscopic images of the esophageal wall. The system has several advantages over traditional endoscopy.

"This system gives us a convenient way to screen for Barrett's that doesn't require patient sedation, a specialized setting and equipment, or a physician who has been trained in endoscopy," says Gary Tearney, MD, PhD, of the Wellman Center and the MGH Pathology Department, corresponding author of the report receiving online publication in Nature Medicine. "By showing the three-dimensional, microscopic structure of the esophageal lining, it reveals much more detail than can be seen with even high-resolution endoscopy."

The system developed by Tearney and his colleagues involves a capsule containing optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI) technology ? a rapidly rotating laser tip emitting a beam of near-infrared light and sensors that record light reflected back from the esophageal lining. The capsule is attached to a string-like tether that connects to the imaging console and allows a physician or other health professional to control the system. After the capsule is swallowed by a patient, it is carried down the esophagus by normal contraction of the surrounding muscles. When the capsule reaches the entrance to the stomach, it can be pulled back up by the tether. OFDI images are taken throughout the capsule's transit down and up the esophagus.

The researchers tested the system in 13 unsedated participants ? six known to have Barrett's esophagus and seven healthy volunteers. The physicians operating the system were able to image the entire esophagus in less than a minute, and a procedure involving four passes ? two down the esophagus and two up ? could be completed in around six minutes. A typical endoscopic examination requires that the patient stay in the endoscopy unit for approximately 90 minutes. The detailed microscopic images produced by the OFDI system revealed subsurface structures not easily seen with endoscopy and clearly distinguished the cellular changes that signify Barrett's esophagus. Study participants who had previously undergone endoscopy indicated they preferred the new procedure.

"The images produced have been some of the best we have seen of the esophagus," says Tearney, a professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and an MGH Research Scholar. "We originally were concerned that we might miss a lot of data because of the small size of the capsule; but we were surprised to find that, once the pill has been swallowed, it is firmly 'grasped' by the esophagus, allowing complete microscopic imaging of the entire wall. Other methods we have tried can compress the esophageal lining, making it difficult to obtain accurate, three-dimensional pictures. The capsule device provides additional key diagnostic information by making it possible to see the surface structure in greater detail"

Current recommendations for diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus, which is uncommon in women, call for endoscopic screening of men with chronic, frequent heartburn and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Study co-author Norman Nishioka, MD, Wellman Center and MGH Gastroenterology, notes, "An inexpensive, low-risk device could be used to screen larger groups of patients, with the hope that close surveillance of patients found to have Barrett's could allow us to prevent esophageal cancer or to discover it at an earlier, potentially curable stage. But we need more studies to see if that hope would be fulfilled."

Gay marriage supporters look to next session

(AP) ? With a vote to legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois looking less likely to happen in the next few days, supporters of marriage equality are looking ahead to the following legislative session as their next best hope.

A Senate committee voted 8-5 late Thursday in favor of a bill that would allow gay marriage. But with key supporters absent, Senate Democrats delayed a full floor vote. The Senate then canceled its Friday schedule, and President John Cullerton said lawmakers are unlikely to return to Springfield before the session ends Jan. 9. New lawmakers will be sworn in that day.

Sen. Heather Steans, the bill's sponsor, said it was a matter of "when, not if" the measure will pass. She said people across Illinois and state lawmakers are changing their minds every day and supporting gay marriage.

"This is never going to be an easy one, but it's only going to get easier," Steans said.

Cullerton said it might be weeks before the bill gets a full Senate vote. His spokeswoman conceded that "the bill needs work," and even Steans suggested working with recalcitrant Republicans to get a bipartisan agreement.

"What's important when we reconvene is that we work to protect and strengthen all Illinois families, and that's what this legislation does," Cullerton said in a statement released by a coalition of supporters.

Hopes were high for a productive end to the 97th General Assembly, with legislation not only on gay marriage but on assault-weapons restrictions and a solution to the $96 billion hole in state retirement-benefit accounts.

Gun curbs advanced, and a pension fix has been proposed in the House, which isn't scheduled to return to Springfield until Sunday, giving Gov. Pat Quinn reason to stay optimistic that his top priority will still get attention.

Democrats hold a 35-24 majority in the Senate, but party members outside Chicago don't always toe the line. Not all are on board with extending marriage rights to same-sex couples, and some key supporters did not attend Thursday's session.

Hoping to ride momentum from the November elections and public encouragement from President Barack Obama, backers were jolted by the postponement.

A gay actor who stars in a popular TV comedy campaigned for the measure in Illinois while religious leaders ? including 1,700 clergy, from Catholic to Muslim ? united in writing to exhort lawmakers to oppose it.

Ralph Rivera, a lobbyist for the Illinois Family Institute, told lawmakers the bill was "an attack on our particular religious beliefs" and that it would force churches and other religious institutions to allow their facilities to be used for same-sex marriages.

Steans said that wouldn't be the case, and that she planned to work with Republicans to address some of those concerns.

Supporters said they pressed the matter in the waning days of the General Assembly's session to take advantage of soaring support in the state and nationally. And lame-duck lawmakers theoretically have more freedom to vote without fear of voter backlash.

Even though Democrats will claim a 40-19 advantage in the new session, newcomers will bring more diverse views in a state where southern Illinoisans live closer to Birmingham, Ala., than to Chicago.

The plan comes just 18 months after Illinois recognized civil unions.

If Illinois approves gay marriage, it would become the 10th state in the nation to do so.
