Detroit ? Why is Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves sitting for Game 6 against the Ducks?
Even coach Mike Babcock, who made the decision, is baffled.
"That's a real good question," said Babcock, who will sit Eaves as Justin Abdelkader re-enters after a two-game suspension.
Todd Bertuzzi and Mikael Samuelsson both remain in the lineup. On defense, Carlo Colaiacovo replaces Brian Lashoff.
But back to Eaves, who has done a nice job in the first five games of the series. Babcock seemed legitimately torn about the decision.
"He's done what he's supposed to do," Babcock said. "Run over people. He's a real competitive, competitive guy. But because I have a little more inside information than you do that I'm not sharing, I have to have other guys to cover up for guys in case they can't survive.
"But it makes no sense to me."
As for Colaiacovo, his first season with the Red Wings has been easy to miss if you blinked. He played six games this season after missing 29 games with a right shoulder injury he suffered in the second game of the season in Columbus, then was mostly a healthy scratch mostly after he returned.
Colaiacovo hasn't played since April 14 in Nashville.
"I don't even know what the word is to use," Colaiacovo said of returning to the lineup. "Excited is a small word. It's real gratifying, obviously. The biggest reason why I wanted to come here was to play at this time of year for this team.
"It's obviously been tough watching, but the team's done a great job in getting us to this point and we've got a real good group in here, real resilient group. It has taken a lot of patience and hard work for me to get this opportunity, and I just want to make the most of it tonight."
Sitting and watching hasn't been easy for Colaiacovo.
"It's been real tough. Obviously a new situation for me that I've never dealt with in my life," Colaiacovo said. "But I never made any excuses, just kept working hard, kept the communication open and just tried to be ready and worked hard to be ready, so that when this opportunity came I'd be ready.
"I don't think there was any sense that I wasn't going to be ready."
